Redlands' endangered koalas are running out of places to live.
State-approved developments are destroying core koala habitat, yet environmental conditions meant to protect koalas are not being properly enforced. Unless this changes, our shrinking number of local koalas will not survive.
The expansion of Ormiston College is a clear example. Hundreds of koala habitat trees have been bulldozed despite approval conditions intended to protect wildlife. Redland residents continue their peaceful protests at the College. They are supported by many concerned people and organisations all over Southeast Queensland and Australia. Over 20,000 people have signed the "Stop the Chop” petition, calling for action..
Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie stated his project approval includes 39 conditions and 42 provisions relating to koala protection. Yet community members monitoring the site have documented and reported dozens of apparent breaches involving vegetation clearing, koala protection measures, ecological management and compliance with approval conditions. Despite reports to authorities, there has been little evidence of effective enforcement.
The State says enforcement is Council's role; Council says it’s the State's job. So, who’s responsible and accountable? Meanwhile, koala habitat continues to disappear.
This is not just an Ormiston College problem. Without firm enforcement of environmental approval conditions, Redland koalas remain at high risk from other major developments, including:
