With the excitement of the announcement that Queensland had won the right to host the 2032 Olympics, came the surprise revelation that the Redlands would be the location of the venue for the whitewater events.

Other Olymic whitewater facilities around the world are a cost burden on their citizens, or defunct eyesores.
The 4 events involved could be held at the Penrith, NSW facility, in line with the Olympic objectives.
We believe it's a waste of around $100 million that could be better used to relieve hardship for so many in the wider community.

Re: EPBC Refferal 2026/10471 - Birkdale Community Precinct and Redland Whitewater Centre
I am writing as a member of the Redlands community who is deeply concerned about EPBC Referral 2026/10471 for the proposed Birkdale Community Precinct and Redland Whitewater Centre. I urge you to declare this proposal a controlled action and require a full Environmental Impact Statement.

This site is recognised Core Koala Habitat and an active movement corridor—not unused or degraded land. Recent data confirms that koalas are living and moving through this area. At a time when koala populations in South East Queensland are under serious pressure, protecting places like this is critical.

The proposal would remove at least 126 koala habitat trees, including important “stepping stone” trees that allow koalas to move safely across the landscape. This kind of habitat loss and fragmentation will increase the risk of injury, displacement, and further population decline. Building a large-scale whitewater facility in such a sensitive location is difficult to justify given these impacts.

I am also concerned about the risks to Groundwater Dependent Ecosystems on the site. Excavation of up to seven metres could cause lasting damage to the aquifer and vegetation that support koala habitat. As well, extensive hardening of the adjacent surfaces through car parking, ancillary buildings and roadways is also likely to negatively impact water flow to Groundwater Dependent Ecosystems.These impacts may be irreversible.

The referral does not provide enough certainty or detail. It relies on future mitigation measures that are not yet finalised or enforceable, and the Conservation Agreement intended to protect environmental values has not been completed. This leaves too many unanswered questions about how impacts will actually be avoided or managed.

As a community member, I expect strong environmental protections and transparent decision-making. This proposal is likely to have significant impacts on a threatened species and its habitat, and it deserves the highest level of scrutiny.

I respectfully ask that you declare this a controlled action and require a full Environmental Impact Statement.
