The Urban Koala Timeline - How you can help!!!
Urban Koalas in Redland City – Key Timeline
1990s–2000s: High Numbers, Growing Pressure
- Late 1990s–early 2000s – The Koala Coast (including Redland City) supports thousands of koalas in an increasingly urban landscape.
- 1990s–2000s – Rapid population growth, road construction, vegetation clearing and increasing dog ownership begin driving serious declines across the southern Redlands.
2006–2015: Major Decline Documented
- 2006–2014 – Long-term monitoring shows roughly a two‑thirds to four‑fifths drop in koala numbers from 1996 levels in the Koala Coast area.
- Large greenfield areas in Thornlands, Redland Bay and the Kinross Road area are confirmed as both urban growth fronts and important koala habitat.
Late 2010s: Focus Areas and Early Projects
- 2018 – Ormiston is declared Redland Coast’s first “Koala Safe Neighbourhood”, followed by Birkdale and Thornlands, recognising significant resident urban koalas and conflict hotspots.
- Early stages of the Kinross estate proceed in mapped habitat, beginning fragmentation between Cleveland–Thornlands and Victoria Point.
2019–2020: Stronger State Rules, New Big Sites
- 2019–2020 – Queensland introduces Koala Priority Areas and tougher clearing rules for koala habitat. All of Redland City comes under stronger South East Queensland koala protections.
- 2019 – Former Commonwealth land at Birkdale is secured for community use and the Birkdale Community Precinct concept is launched, with a mix of proposed conservation and major facilities.
- 2010s–early 2020s – The Shoreline development and adjacent land clearing at Redland Bay intensify habitat loss and fragmentation along the southern coastal koala corridor.
2021–2023: Local Koala Plan and Project Detail
- 2021–2022 – Redland City Council adopts the Redlands Coast Koala Conservation Plan 2022–2027, aligning local actions (habitat, roads, dogs, monitoring) with the state SEQ koala strategy.
- 2020–2023 – Koala studies at the Birkdale Community Precinct identify important habitat and movement areas. A large conservation area and revegetation program are proposed, while the planned whitewater facility and other major uses raise concern about fragmentation, disturbance and traffic impacts.
- Early 2020s – The Heinemann Road regional sporting complex is planned in a semi‑rural koala area, prompting concern about a new mortality hotspot without strong design and mitigation.
2024–2026: New PDAs, Next Stages, Future Direction
- 2024–2025 – The Southern Thornlands Priority Development Area (PDA) is declared over about 900 ha inside a Koala Priority Area. Assessments confirm high koala activity and key corridors, but draft plans show dense housing pushing into core habitat.
- Next phases of the Kinross estate and continued build‑out of Shoreline threaten remaining vegetated paddocks and narrow corridors that still link Thornlands, Victoria Point and Redland Bay.
- 2025 – Community and conservation groups highlight the combined risk of the Birkdale whitewater proposal, Heinemann Road sporting complex, Southern Thornlands PDA and Shoreline as a “death by a thousand cuts” scenario for urban koalas.
- 2026 – A new 10‑year South East Queensland koala strategy is being developed by the Queensland Government. The strength of its mapping and development rules will heavily influence whether urban koalas in Redland City recover or are further squeezed into shrinking, isolated pockets.
And right now....
The State Government is developing a new SEQ Koala Conservation Strategy that is open for comment until 5pm March 15, 2026.
Community input is vital in informing the deliberation process, and giving our valued Redlands urban koalas a fair go.
In spite of the celebration about population stability, habitat clearing is still occurring. Stability, if it is true, will surely be tested.
